From August 29th to September 3rd, 2022, a field survey was conducted on Selayar Island, Rajuni Island, and Tarupa Island in Selayar Islands Regency, Indonesia. Prof. Nagatsu Kazufumi (Representative of Toyo University Site) and Dr. Nakano Makibi (Core Researcher, National Institute for the Humanities, Toyo University), Dr. Dedi Supriadi Adhuri, National Research and Innovation Agency (Indonesian: Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional, BRIN) and Ms. Nur Abu (Muhammadiyah University of Sorong) participated in the field survey as research collaborators.
On Selayar Island, we interviewed Fisheries Department officials and marine product brokers and visited exhibits such as the Dong Son Drum, which shows the spread of the ancient Vietnamese Dong Son culture.
The islands of Rajuni and Tarupa, where many Bajo (Bajau) people live, are in the Taka Bonerate National Park. We interviewed Bugis and Bajau people on these islands about their history, fishing activities, and maritime networks.
