From September 8th to 11th, 2022, Dr. Nakano Makibi (Core Researcher, National Institute for the Humanities, Toyo University) conducted a field survey in the Banggai Islands, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.
The Banggai Islands were hit by an earthquake and tsunami in May 2000, which washed away coastal villages.
Some of the settlements are now undergoing the construction of seawalls.
On the islands of Peleng and Banggai, Dr. Nakano inspected seawalls and evacuation routes in the event of a disaster and interviewed the Bajau people about their harvesting of marine products.
